3D scanning of existing building fabric and local environment is a revolutionary technology allowing for an extremely precise BIM modelling of architectural projects. This technology recently proved its value in our project of an adaptation of Blast Furnace in Ruda Slaska into a cultural centre. The complex shape of existing structures made it virtually impossible to recreate the existing buildings based on 2d plans only. Our team used 3d scanning and point cloud technology to recreate the building in a virtual environment utilising the latest ArchiCAD and CloudCompare software. The model has subsequently been used as a basis for design and planning of the project as well as for creating computer generated imagery.
