Viaduc de la Baye de Clarens

The design for this railway bridge not only had to respond to the natural beauty of the site, but also an expected differential movement of more than a metre over the 100 year lifetime of the bridge. The extremely elegant design solution uses a distinctive enclosed extradosed structure to follow a single soaring arc through 3 dimensional space. It is both simple and dynamic, creating a stunning and contemporary contrast to the ruin of the old stone bridge. Built using internal steel cables and modular precast concrete construction, the bridge will have a zero carbon footprint and require only minimal maintenance.
